Implementation Research for Scaling Up and Commercialization of Innovations

The NCST won a grant of up to 250,000 USD from the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) to Fund & Manage Research & Innovation Projects.Under this grant, a total of five (5) projects will be funded. The NCST has prioritized four (4) national scaling up projects and additional one (1) project to be co-funded by NCST. These projects have been selected from projects funded under NCST and SGCI Phase 2 based on the project feasibility for scale up and be commercialized.

In addition, as per NCST requirement regarding gender inclusivity of at least 30% of projects funded are led by women, at least one project shall be led by women and ≥30% women participation/involvement in implementation of all projects. In addition, the selected projects will be encouraged to include young researchers (i.e., post graduate students) to support in the implementation of the project in order to encourage aspects of mentorship to junior researchers. The aim is to ensure transfer of generated research outputs to private sector/firms and that the project products and services are being commercialized. These projects are in line with the national priority areas:

a. Food security and modern agriculture (2 projects)

  1. Improve livelihoods of citizens through the development of biocontrol products based on local beneficial insect-killing nematodes
  2. Improve food nutrition through Rwanda Cricket farming to fight against malnutrition
  3. Improve agriculture mechanization through Development of Multi-Grain Seeding Machine

b. Resilient Environment and Climate Change (1 project),

  1. Development of technologies/systems that contribute in reduction of air pollution and climate change impact eg: Environmentally friendly technologies, use of vehicle Pollution Monitoring systems.

c. Local Production and Value Addition (1 project).

  1. Enhancement of Made in Rwanda Products: e.g.: Production Technology, Quality and Competitiveness of Rwanda Banana Beverage Products

A closed call was launched on July 21, 2023 and it is expected that the required documents are provided by the selected projects by August 4, 2023 to ensure we move forward with implementation.
